Duguay Trouin’s story begun when he smacked a priest over the head with a ruler.
He grew up to captain a ship. But not just any ship - he became Captain of a Corsair. Half-pirate half-battleship, the Corsairs were some of the most exciting vessels ever to float.
The Corsairs of France tells the tales of some of the most famous – some would say infamous – Corsair captains. Raiding the Dutch and the English alike during wartime, seizing, selling, sinking and even setting enemy ships alight, the Corsair captains were quick and ruthless.
The captains (Jean Bart, Jaques Cassard, Duguay Trouin, Francois Thurot, Louis Leveille and Robert Surcouf) were brilliant men sharp-tongued and sharper-minded.
Set against the backdrop of the Age of Discovery and the significant naval battles it involved, C. B. Norman uses their lives to explore the history of European naval warfare and to illustrate the importance of having a strong Navy.
The Corsairs of France eBook C B Norman
Reviewed Edward J. Clode, Inc. edition, 1929, 314 pages, with illustrations by Edward C. Caswell. Seven short biographies of French Corsair captains and a lot of material on the times, places and battles of the greats of the French Naval forces. Almost everything that you should know about the Corsairs and their era in history up to the end of the French Revolution. Unlike a photo reprint book, this is bound and redone edition, possibly abridged, of the original material, without maps. A Must read for those interested in naval matters. Thanks, Harry!Reviewed Sampson Low, Marston, Searle & Rivington edition, 1887, 464 pages with 'portraits and a map' by C. B. Norman (Late 90th Light Infantry). Very close to the photoreprint reproduction editions of 515 pages. The map is simply spectacular though very brittle world map with the corsair actions marked on it. Seven short action adventure biographies of the 'independent' captains of France up to the end of the French Revolution. The eighth chapter is about the lesser 'lights' and serves as a recap of the era. The additional eight chapter, map, is also accompanied by 22 (XXII) appendix's which are fantastic additional information with titles such as "French Privateers Captured, 1793-1815". Each appendix is a rare gem of writing, NOT found in modern books. Very Highly recommended read. Thanks, Harry!
